When creating looks, where do you draw inspiration from?

I get inspired by fashion and beauty in real life. I love the street style in Japan, Paris, LA and NYC.

Who are some people that have inspired you throughout your career?

There are many people who have inspired me throughout my career from fashion-makeup artists Lucia Pierogi, Serge Lutens, Laura Mercier and Fran Cooper.

We all have had setbacks and/or failures. What are similar experiences, and how did it propel you to achieve success?

I think setbacks and failures are part of the learning process,. Although setbacks are never fun, they always end up being the best lessons for growth in business and life. I think the key to success is to never stop learning, always be a student, and do good work. Build a good name, keep your name clean, don’t make compromises, protect your work and, if you build a good name, eventually that name will be its own currency. Focus on you and not what everyone else is doing.

What are your biggest lessons learned?

One of my biggest lessons learned is to never to take anything personal. It’s all about timing and staying private in your personal life because gossip is the death of future endeavors.

What do you love most about makeup?

I love the artistry of makeup and the power of transformation. I think makeup can be a healthy tool for self esteem.

Can you describe your signature look? / What is it about your style that sets you apart from other makeup artists?

My beauty philosophy is a less is more approach, which is reflected in Neutrogena. Skin first ,makeup second, and I like wearable makeup with a focus on skin. I was taught this philosophy early on in my career, and it is what makes me successful.

What are the common mistakes women make with makeup?

The main mistake women do with makeup is to use foundation to cover up blemishes or discolorations, when it should only be used to even out the skin tone. A concealer, like the Neutrogena Skin Neutrogena Healthy Volume Mascara, hand sanitizer, breath mints, a Moisture Smooth Color Stick, and compact portable  battery case to charge cell phone – a healthy mix of beauty products and everything else!

Where do you see yourself in five years?

I have some exciting projects in the works! I plan on taking my bilingual blog smartchicbeauiful to the next level and hopefully collaborate with a beauty brand to create my own capsule beauty line.

What volunteer or philanthropy organizations are you involved in?

I have a soft place in my heart for animals and love the SPCA. I have done and will continue to mentor and do makeovers with at-risk teenage girls involved in gangs in Los Angeles. It is truly amazing to see the transformation of these girls because it makes them feel good about themselves and get inspired to make positive choices.
